An ACL injury Was in Danger of Cutting a Young Athlete’s Dreams Short
6’ 7” Nathan had a dream. He wanted to play college basketball, and after a lot of hard work and determination his skills brought him to the attention of many Division 1 college teams. Then, the unthinkable happened; He injured his ACL. A devastating injury for the promising young athlete. An injury that saw big school interest dropping fast.

Doctor’s Orders
A logical first choice, Nathan’s family searched for answers from his Primary Care Physician/PCP. On doctor’s orders Nathan began with Physical Therapy, a slow and methodical process. He rested, went to therapy, and repeated. But, time spent at therapy was time off the basketball court. When Nathan tried to struggle through games, the lack of practice and apparent knee pain clearly made him less effective.
An Alternative to Surgery
Eventually the family’s search for alternatives led them to Regenexx. Our procedures for knee pain brought a non-surgical procedure the family had not previously considered. Regenexx procedures are designed to use your own body’s cells to promote healing, with a recovery period that is faster than surgical repair alternatives. The injections work to stimulate the cells that already exist at the site of an injury, and increase natural healing.
At Regenexx ACL injuries are often treated via “Regenexx-SD”, a procedure that uses bone marrow concentrate that contains a patient’s own live stem cells. These cells are harvested and reinjected on the same day. Regenexx doctors also often use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) alone or in combination with bone marrow concentrate injections to strengthen the knee, particularly where there is strain but not an ACL tear.

Nathan’s Dream Back On Track
Within a month of his procedure, Nathan could feel how much he was improving. He still had to go through physical therapy, but the PRP the therapy was working. With the start of his next season he was ready to go, and throughout the season he claimed to be free from any knee pain or injury. His dream was finally back on track, and he again looks forward to a Division 1 journey.
Conclusion
There are about 6.5 ACL injuries for every 100,000 times student athletes participate in a practice or competition. [3] These are devastating injuries, with many sufferers choosing to undergo invasive surgeries with long recovery times. Regenexx procedures are a less invasive alternative to surgery.
Regenexx keeps a registry that tracks outcomes for multiple joint pain procedures. For an ACL tear, with 11,790 knee patients tracked, ACL patients on average feel their joints are 35% better over only 1-month, and they continue to improve from there. [4].

Regenexx doctors have performed over 142,000 procedures for common injuries, arthritis and other joint conditions. These procedures offer the patient a viable alternative to invasive orthopedic surgery. increase function, decrease pain and quickly get patients back to the things they love.
